Ignea Labs is a public art and research studio in the Denver metropolitan area. We are developing Living Structures: planted, self-shading public sculptures that people walk into, cooler and more humid inside than the street. No Living Structure has been built in the United States yet. We are seeking host sites, fabrication partners and funding across the United States, especially communities affected by extreme dryness, heat and air pollution.
PUBLIC ART·DIGITAL MEDIA·REGENERATIVE ARCHITECTURE·ANCESTRAL MEMORY
A planted public sculpture, entered on foot, built on the Green Wall shelving system Adam Kalinowski tested in 2014 at the Botanical Garden of Adam Mickiewicz University and realized at scale in THE INFINITE GREEN in 2015. The Colorado build adapts that system to a semi-arid, high-altitude, heat-stressed climate, with free public workshops and open publication of the findings.
THE INFINITE GREEN (Adam Kalinowski, 2015, Wrocław, Poland): roughly 110 m² of planted shelving carrying about 3,000 plants of 100 perennial species, cooler and more humid inside than the street. Commissioned for the visual arts program of European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016.
RAINBOW PARK (Adam Kalinowski, 2012, London), commissioned by Southbank Centre for Festival of the World, approximately 50 × 7 m, 150 tonnes of quartz sand. Southbank Centre estimated 7.8 million people passed through the site over three months.
CLOUDY THOUGHTS (Adam Kalinowski, 2013, São Paulo), a planted pavilion at MuBE, curated and produced by Mirelle Martins, marking the beginning of the collaboration that developed into Living Structures.
